Nasabnya bersambung sampai Rasulullah SAW. Habib Umar bin Abdurrahman Al-Atthas lahir pada tahun 992 H/ 1572 M di desa Lisk, dekat kota Inat, Hadramaut. Beliau pula yang mula-mula mendapat gelar Al-Attas Orang yang bersin, yang kemudian digunakan sebagai nama sebuah marga. Dijuluki demikian karena dahulu ketika masih berada dalam kandungan sang ibunda Syarifah Muznah binti Muhammad Al-Jufri, beliau sering bersin. Itulah karamah pertama Habib Umar bisa bersin ketika masih berada dalam kandungan. Sejak kecil beliau diasuh dan dididik oleh ayah beliau sendiri, Habib Abdurrahman bin Aqil. Meskipun matanya tidak dapat melihat sejak kecil, tetapi Allah SWT memberi beliau kecerdasan otak dan pandangan hati bashirah yang tajam, hingga beliau mudah menghafal apa saja yang didengar. Beliau termasuk rang yang tekun beribadah, buktinya beliau sering ke kota Tarim dengan berjalan dari desanya Lisk dan melakukan shalat dua rakaat di setiap masjid yang ada di kota Tarim, bahkan menimba air dari sumur untuk mengisi kolam-kolam masjid. Baca juga Sayyid Utsman Betawi dan Pengenalan Habaib di Nusantara Habib Umar termasuk Sayyid dari marga al-Atthas yang pertama kali keluar untuk berdakwah di lembah Hadramaut. Hingga akhirnya beliau menetap di desa Huraidzah pada tahun 1040 H dan kini menjadi terkenal sebagai kampung halaman marga al-Atthas. Ketika tiba di Huraidzah untuk pertama kali, Habib Umar diminta oleh Syaikh Najjaad Adz-Dzibyani untuk menetap di rumahnya, karena sangat menghormati dan mengharap barokah yang nampak keluar dari beliau. Dahulu di desa tersebut ada seorang wanita yang bernama Shalihah. Dia bernazar untuk memberikan harta dan bagian dari rumahnya kepada Habib Umar. Pemberian dari wanita itu diterima oleh Habib Umar yang kemudian beliau meminangnya sebagai imbalan atas kebaikannya itu. Beliau pernah belajar pada Habib Muhdhar bin Syaikh Abu Bakar bin Salim, Habib Muhammad bi Abdurrahman Al-Hadi, dan dari Sayyid Umar bin Isa Barakwah as-Samarqandi. Beliau juga menerima sanad kalimat talqin La Ilaha illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah dari Syaikh al-Arif billah Asy-syarif Umar bin Isa Barakwah As Samarqandi al-Maghribi, yang cabangnya sampai kepada Syaikh Abdul Qadiral-Jailani, di mana sanadnya bersambung sampai derngan Rasulullah SAW. Habib Umar menimba sanad tarekat dan baju sufi dari gurunya, Imam Husain bin Abu Bakar bin Salim Shahib Inat. Sedangkan talqin dzikirnya beliau ambil dari Imam Umar Barakwah As Samarkandi yang dimakamkan di daerah Ghurfah. Adapun jabatan tangan beliau ambil dari Imam Muhammad Al Hadi bin Abdurrahman Bin Syihabuddin Ahmad bin Abdurrahman bin Abu Bakar dengan sanad yang sampai kepada Syeikh Ali bin Abu Bakar. Sanad Syeikh Ali ini telah disebutkan dalam kitabnya Al-Burqah. Dan di antara murid-murid Habib Umar adalah Habib Abdullah bin Alwi al-Haddad, Sayid Ali bin Umar bin Husein bin Ali bin Syaikh Abu Bakar, dan Syaikh Ali bin Abdullah Baras. Menulis Ratib Al-Atthas Habib Umar bin Abdurrahman al-Atthas menggubah ratib yang diberi nama "Azizul Manalwa Fathu Babil Wishal" anugerah agung dan pembuka pintu tujuan yang terkenal juga dengan nama Ratibul Atthas. Ratib ini merupakan wirid yang banyak mendatangkan faedah bagi yang gemar membacanya, terutama bagi yang sedang mengalami kesulitan. Habib Umar al-Attas sendiri berwasiat, "Rahasia dan hikmah telah kutitipkan di dalam Ratib itu.â Habib Umar bin Abdurrahman al-Atthas wafat pada tengah malam malam Kamis tanggal 23 Rabi'ul Akhir 1072 H/ 1652 M di desa Nafhun. Jenazah beliau dimakamkan di desa Huraidzah pada kamis sore. Oleh karena itu perhatikanlah kebiasaan baik yang engkau menginginkan wafat dalam kondisi tersebut, dan jauhilah kebiasaan buruk yang engkau tidak ingin wafat dalam kebiasaan seperti itu. Sumber-sumber ilmu tidak akan berkurang sedikit pun dari generasi terkemudian. Akan tetapi pada umumnya mereka datang dengan membawa wadah yang bocor, sehingga tidak memperoleh ilmu kecuali sedikit. Hendaknya orang orang yang menghendaki keselamatan akhirat meninggalkan tidurnya, demi untuk mendapatkan siraman rahmat di malam hari. Buah kurma atau ketimun dari sumber yang halal, lebih baik dari bubur daging dari sumber yang syubhat. Perbanyaklah membaca istighfar dan shalawat, karena keduanya adalah sebaik-baik dzikir yang dapat menolong kesulitan di masa kini. Kamiingin sekali mirip Habib Umar ibnu Abdurrahman al-Attas, karena ia banyak berkunjung ke banyak sekali tempat, untuk berda'wah dengan tidak ditemani orang lain. Al-Habib Abdullah al-Haddad berkata juga: "Pada tahun 1071 H, tepatnya hari Isnin tanggal 21 Jamadil Akhir, ketika kami berkunjung ke tempat al-Habib Umar al-Attas, maka kami h6Nk52.
